The South African police had a far more paramilitary role in the 1970s and 1980s than we are used to police units, with many being active against Communist backed insurgents as well as having a key role in maintaining civil order within South Africa itself. The South African police have a controversial reputation to say the least, but from a purely historical perspective they are a very interesting unit.
