Italian Medals – Kingdom of Italy – Vittorio Emanuele III (1900-1945) – Twenty Years of Fascism – Ethiopia – AOI. Badge issued for the foundation of the empire. Obv/ within two adjacent medallions, surmounted by a Savoy eagle with outstretched wings, facing busts of Vittorio Emanuele III and Mussolini below within folder ETHIOPIA ITALIANA 5 9 MAGGIO XIV. Reverse/negative of the obverse and portative pin. Opus Pagani Emilio Milano. White Metal pin (MB) (32x30mm, 3.2gr.). Condition VF/XF. References Casolari XIV-49. On the evening of May 9, 1936, Benito Mussolini proclaimed from the balcony of Piazza Venezia “the reappearance of the Empire on the fatal hills of Rome.” The event represents the highest point of the Italian people’s consensus towards the regime. The new Fascist Empire, however, would last less than five years. The conquest of Ethiopia also served to avenge the defeat at Adwa in 1896 and to demonstrate that fascism succeeded precisely where the ruling class of liberal Italy had failed. For these reasons, Italy did everything it could to find a casus belli: the incident at Waal Waal in December 1934 offered the regime what it had long been waiting for. The Italian offensive began on October 3, 1935, and command of the expedition was entrusted to General Emilio De Bono, Minister of the Colonies and High Commissioner for Eastern Africa. Accused of excessive caution, he was replaced on the Eritrean front by Marshal Pietro Badoglio, who led the Italian forces to the decisive battle on Lake Ascianghi. The victory pushed the Italians to Addis Ababa, which they reached on May 5, 1936. On May 9, the other section of the Italian army, commanded by General Rodolfo Graziani, also reached the Ethiopian capital.
