Historically, “South West Africa” was a former German colony, then a mandate of South Africa, and finally gained independence as Namibia in 1990.
During the period of South Africa’s administration (especially in the mid-20th century), various military and paramilitary units were tasked with tracking insurgents or guerrilla fighters, including those involved in the Namibian War of Independence. These specialists were often referred to as “trackers” or “SWA trackers.” Their main role was to follow and gather intelligence on enemy movements in the vast, often harsh, terrain of South West Africa (now Namibia).
